Miss Pickles came to Coast to Coast Dachshund (CCDR) as a stray (out of Lancaster County PA) so little is known about her history. When she was found, it was obvious that she had been used for breeding. Miss Pickles weighs in at 9.6 lbs and is believed to be approximately 3-5 yrs old. Her coat is smooth, shiny and thin, and her color somewhat eludes us. When she first arrived, she resembled an Isabella, but now that she's started on a healthy diet she is evolving to be more Red (and sometimes brownish).

Miss Pickles is a sweet, tenacious little girl who has surpassed the obstacles thrown at her so far in her short life. CCDR wants to ensure that the rest of her life is wonderful in spite of her first (likely horrific*) years. When Miss Pickles arrived into CCDR foster care she was 'shut down'. She acts as if she had been a *puppy mill dog. When she is picked up, petted or touched in any way, she freezes and shows absolutely no emotion. She doesn’t wag her tail from human interaction, but we are hoping to work on this and show her that human touch does not have to be a scary thing.

Miss Pickles loves to go into the garden at her foster home. Initially, because of her separation anxiety, she would only follow her foster Mom around. Now, Miss Pickles will venture off on her own to discover all the secrets a garden holds for a dog. Wait until the cherry tomatoes ripen and she learns she can pick her own snacks!

One thing that has become a favorite of hers is to eat! Miss Pickles LOVES to eat! Right now, she is getting twice the amount that she should be getting for her size. That will eventually taper off, but for now she is enjoying yogurt and cottage cheese, all kinds of eggs, fruit and veggies and a homemade meat mixture with supplements. She loves it all and that is one thing that will definitely get her tail wagging. How wonderful it is to watch the progress she is making.

Miss Pickles has alopecia (hair loss), which can be typical with Isabella coats. During her physical exam, our vet offered no other explanation as to the reason. On Miss Pickles, the hair loss is somewhat symmetrical, but it doesn’t seem to affect her in any way and is purely a cosmetic issue. To be supportive of this condition, her foster home has started protocol for general alopecia beginning with her diet change. We would encourage interested applicants to do their research on this condition to learn how to best support her care (as well as research Dachshund coat colors, because this gal appears to be part-chameleon!). In her best interest, we feel a holistic caregiver and someone who understands about the behavior of puppy mill dogs might be the best type of home for Miss Pickles.

Miss Pickles' new home should be one where her caregiver(s) is home most of the time. We are not sure how long her separation anxiety is going to last but we are not expecting it to be life-long. She would do well in a home with (respectful) teenagers, adults (both male and female), dogs and cats. Because of her skittish, shy, reserved nature, the new home should be on the quiet side where routine is the norm. Having another Dachshund or two would be a plus but isn’t necessarily a requirement; she is certainly learning from and has started to play with other dogs in her foster home.

Miss Pickles...
... gets along great with dogs, cats, all adults and teenagers.
... is house trained in her foster home; should be pee-pad trained by the time she is ready for adoption.
... sleeps in bed under the covers tight up against her human.
... has separation anxiety and prefers to be with her human...follows them around like a lifeline.
... does not play with toys (yet).
... is a sneaky escape artist.
... can climb small/short/low fences.
... cannot wear a collar (she keeps trying to get it off and gets her jaw caught in it).
... could be a great emotional support dog.
... ravenously eats everything placed in front of her.
... no crating because of her history; she currently only eats in a crate.
... will not require much exercise.

CCDR has only had Miss Pickles since June 23rd and her personality changes daily. Within her first week, she met strangers (all females, including a teen) and she acted as though she was excited to see them. She has been to the vet for her spay, vaccines and a dental (her teeth were REALLY bad, although she didn’t lose any!).
