This is Gus!

Gus is a big love bug who gets along with everyone and he’s adapted fairly easily to different environments during his lifetime. Gus LOVES all affection, including being carried…anything that allows him to be closer to you, the better. The ideal home for Gus would be with someone who is home a lot. Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (CCDR) previously adopted Gus out in January 2020 as a cart dog, recovering from IVDD. Gus does require some continued care (and understanding) because of his former back issue. Gus was recently returned to CCDR after his family underwent some life changes which created difficulty for them to provide him with the attention he deserves.

Fast forward up to Gus’s recent return, and he hasn’t used his cart in over a year! He has a somewhat wobbly, stiff walk, but he still gets around great and he runs like a champ (check out his champion running photo below). He had all his teeth removed during a prior dental, which has also added to his quirky character. Gus can’t fully hold his pee very well and dribbles here and there, so he always wears his belly band inside. He IS a housetrained dog and he does try to hold it until he gets outside, but especially in the mornings he needs to get out of his enclosure and be at the door ready to run. Gus pees a lot on his own but he can’t fully empty his bladder and he needs to be expressed at least once a day to get emptied.

When left home alone and overnight, Gus does well in a gated area with room to move around and he also has access to his crate (in which he enjoys spending time). He almost always pees during a long day alone, and there’s also pee and usually poop overnight that requires a quick cleanup. In general, he mostly knows when he needs to go potty and he will let you know. It’s during the longer periods of time when he has trouble holding it, which is why he’d do better with someone who is home most of the time.

A fenced-in yard or enclosed portion of a yard would also be great for Gus because he LOVES laying outside in the sun and rolling in grass. He also loves following his foster family around and playing with the kids. That’s right! Gus loves kids and gets along fine with other pets. He can handle a busy household but he also loves (& requires) a nice lap to lounge on. He can be as lazy as anyone wants him to be and yet he loves running around outside as well.

For a dog like Gus, consistency and routine are what’s best for him. He very easily drops and gains weight, so his diet needs to be consistent. Expressing him is a daily requirement, which he vocally objects to. He hasn’t shown an ounce of aggression towards any people. He loves people! He tries to boss other dogs, especially the big dogs. He’s a dachshund, so he does bark, but not excessively. After he was first returned, he barked when left alone at night, but after he settled into his new routine and adapted to the change in his surroundings the barking has ceased.

We think Gus will fit into almost any household, but his attention and care are most important. He LOVES lounging and keeping laps warm. He ENJOYS playing and keeping up with children and other dogs. He’s laid back, yet he also goes with the flow when his household gets busy. He gets along with other pets, but he loves his people the most and could potentially do well as an only pet, where he could get ALL of his owner’s attention. Given time to settle in, Gus really seems to adapt and he goes with the flow of whatever is going on around him.

The perfect home will be able to keep up with his routine and care and give him all the attention he deserves. He’s a spry 10-year old with a lot of love to give. Will you be Gus's next and final home? We're looking for someone who will spoil and enjoy all of Gus’s charming qualities as much as we do!
