My name is Cherokee. My former owner’s health was declining and she could no longer care for me, so she surrendered me to Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (CCDR) so I could find another loving, caring home. At first, I was really frightened in my foster home. I did not want to leave my doggy playpen, and my foster mom had to carry me outside for potty breaks. Eventually, I realized that this is a safe place for me. I have my foster-home dog buddies to run around and play with in the yard, and I enjoy rolling around in the grass and soaking up the sunshine. 

I am housebroken and when my foster mom is away, we pups have free access throughout the house. We especially enjoy having fluffy pet pillows which we can nap on whenever we want. At night we all curl up on the bed for a good night’s sleep. 

I am a longhaired dachshund so do not be fooled by my short hair as pictured; it is my summer cut so I can be comfortable during the hot weather months. I am a happy little guy who likes lots of attention. Although I am not big on giving puppy kisses, I give high-fives. I like belly rubs and will give lots of high-fives in exchange for belly rubs. 

My foster home has a big, scary cat (not really) who chased me around the yard (that did happen!). I think it’s safe to say I am good around cats but will run away from them if they are big and scary and chase after me. 

I am learning how to walk on a leash. I seem to always want to go in a direction opposite where my foster mom wants to take me. But I do like taking walks, so with a little more practice I will get better at walking on a leash. 

I am in good health for a senior dog. My only issue is that I don’t have any teeth left which is why I am not good at giving puppy kisses. Since teeth serve as guardrails for the tongue, without them it is hard for me to move my tongue in the desired direction. Without teeth, I also require a diet of soft or canned dog food. All food or treats for me must be cut into small pieces which I can easily swallow so I don’t accidentally choke on pieces that are too big. 

To recap: I am a healthy, happy little guy, who likes attention. I am housebroken and I like belly rubs, giving high-fives, rolling around in the grass, and basking in the sun. I will run away from big, scary cats. I am slowly learning to walk on a leash. I have no teeth so my food and treats must be soft and cut into small pieces.
