This adorable duo are Dolly (the black & tan dapple) and Lily (the red, w/one dapple ear). These two girls wound up stranded at their veterinarian’s office after being boarded while their elderly owner took a trip to the hospital, which unfortunately ended with her admission into assisted living. Both girls turned 10 years old in May and were very much loved by their owner since they were 12-weeks old.

The girls are similarly natured, cautious at first but quickly friendly. They are both potty pad trained and have added doggy-door trained to their resume while in foster care. Both walk well on their leashes and enjoy spending time in a fenced yard at their foster home. With being potty pad trained, they don’t always use their time outside for consistent pottying, but they have been improving and using their pads less and less.

At one time, both girls were overweight, with Dolly weighing in at 18 pounds and Lily at 22 pounds. Both girls have some excess loose skin on their underbellies, but they are currently at a much healthier weight. It’s no surprise that the girls were big beggars at first and are food motivated, but they’ve quickly adjusted to understanding when it’s their time to eat.

The girls prefer sleeping in dog beds and, initially, they did not ask to get up on furniture. They enjoy being held and have recently started asking to get up, although not constantly. The girls have been responding well to their new routines and keep showing more and more of their personalities the longer that we care for them. Dolly is very eager to please and has been following routines quite well. Lily is more aloof and still needs some extra encouragement and guidance.

While in foster care, Dolly received a dental cleaning, resulting in the extraction of 5 teeth. She also has other teeth missing from lack of previous dental care. Dolly had inactive cherry eye in both eyes for which she had a surgical procedure to correct. She has some scarring in her eyes which does not seem to affect her vision. Towards the end of 2024, Dolly experienced some gastro-intestinal troubles, which started after a pancreatitis diagnosis. She was in and out of the vet frequently for a 4-month period, but with a controlled low-fat (prescription) diet and daily famotidine, she has avoided further (monthly) visits to the vet.

Lily has advanced degenerative valve disease causing a Grade 5 (out of 6) heart murmur. Lily does not show signs of pulmonary hypertension and her breathing is normal; however, she is at risk for future development of congestive heart failure. After we took her to a cardiologist, Lily started several medications to hopefully curtail rapid advancement of her heart disease. Lily was not cleared for any procedures that include elective anesthesia, so we have been unable to treat her grade 3 dental disease with a cleaning. In April 2025, Lily added IVDD to her medical portfolio and was down for 2 months. After strict crate rest and attempted acupuncture treatments, she has recovered nicely and is back on her paws again, happily exploring outside with her sister.

Neither dog has shown food or toy aggression, although we do feed them separately to ensure each dog gets their medication and is limited to the foods applicable to their health concerns. Although the girls stick together, they got along well with the other two dogs in their first foster home and did not show interest in cats. Although cautious, they’ve been friendly when introduced to strangers and children. They exhibit some fear towards men and Lily continues to bark periodically at their foster dad. For the most part, they’re very cheerful and mellow little girls.

Dolly and Lily were littermates and have always been side-by-side, so we hope to adopt them out together. We hope to find someone who either has experience with a dog who has had heart disease or will be dedicated to learning how to best care for Lily. Lily’s currently prescribed medications cost approximately $38 per 30-day supply (estimated thru Chewy Rx) and she should eat a high quality dog food that adheres to certain dietary restrictions as recommended by her cardiologist. Lily is due for a re-check with the cardiologist every 6 months, including physical exam, blood chemistry profile with electrolytes, blood pressure and echocardiogram, and it is recommended she be seen by her regular vet every 4-6 months. And since her bout with IVDD, she needs to be watched for jumping. Dolly requires a prescription diet, too, so the girls will require a dedicated line-item in their owner's budget.

It’s so easy to fall in love with Dolly's crooked smile and Lily’s expressive eyes, but we’re looking for that special home who can support the necessary medical care for both girls. These girls deserve to be spoiled for the rest of their lives! They are sweet, polite, and seek approval and love from their humans. If you can provide that special home for these girls, please fill out the Adoption Application on our website.
