Hoss is an affectionate, lovable dog who thrives on belly rubs, snuggling, and lots of lap-time (and of course, treats!). Hoss has a few quirks that make him unique. Hoss was born with a birth defect, and the doctors he’s seen believe the tendons and nerve sensation are cut from his rear right leg from an injury at birth. It causes him no pain or discomfort and although his leg is non-functioning, essentially making him a tripod, he does use it for balance and some mobility. Don’t tell him that he’s not “running on all cylinders” since he loves doing zoomies, chasing his ball, and running after wildlife outside. Hoss has lots of energy and he enjoys going on daily walks. Hoss’s enthusiasm for chasing rabbits and squirrels means you need to have a firm hold on his leash and he needs supervision while outside.

He will announce the arrival of strangers but cautiously warms up to them, taking his time to evaluate newcomers. After he accepts you into his life, he is like a Velcro dog to those he chooses for his inner circle, warmly showing them his loving and loyal side. Hoss has a playful side; he’ll dance for treats and likes rolling in the grass, all with a joyful spirit that’s impossible to resist. While family is at home, he enjoys free rein of the main living areas, wherever someone is nearby, following his people from room to room. Hoss wants to be wherever you are, whether it’s enjoying the outdoors or relaxing on your lap. He’s used to sleeping in his crate at night and feels comfortable being crated when left alone at home. Hoss’s biggest area for improvement has been with his potty training. He’s gotten better following daytime routines and will tell you when he needs an overnight break. He will likely require a similar period of adjustment after finding his forever home, but he is trainable and responds to routines and treats.

Like many dogs, Hoss is sensitive to loud noises and fireworks, and nail trims are a special challenge. Hoss gets extremely anxious going to the vet and requires pre-medication, and his nail trims have been best handled at the vet’s office. Oddly enough, bathing Hoss is a breeze and he prefers showers to baths and is fond of being wrapped in warm towels afterward.

Hoss gets along with both canine and feline foster siblings and has been okay around small children. His excitement and playful aggression around big dogs matches their size, so he might be better suited in a home with other small dogs or he’d be okay as an only dog. With a bit of patience and lots of love, Hoss is ready to become a loyal and cherished member of his future family.
