Meet Schatzy…a 15-lb, 21-month old, neutered, black/tan, smooth Dachshund who is looking for his new home. Through no fault of his own, Schatzy has had numerous homes in his short life, so we are going to do our diligence in making sure this next home is his last!
Schatzy's foster family calls him perfect! An exaggeration? Perhaps. But when you hear what they have to say about Schatzy, perhaps you, too, will think he is perfect!
- Schatzy likes humans - both young and old, male and female; he likes other dogs - both big and little; and he likes cats! He knows and understands doggie etiquette.
- Schatzy shares his toys and his food! He loves toys but he does have a tendency to gut the fluffy ones.
- Schatzy is an absolute sweetheart! There is an 'old soul' feel about him; maybe because at 21 months, he’s been through a lot of change. He is gentle, polite and sensitive. He does have a touch of separation anxiety which is understandable considering his history.
- Schatzy does not have an ounce of aggression in him. While at the vet, he made no objection to anything that happened to him. Doc even mentioned what a wonderful addition he would be to any family, and said we could quote him on that!
- Schatzy loves to take walks but he is ok to just hang out in the yard, too. As long as he is with his person/people, he is ok with where he is. And he’s a snuggler who loves to sleep with his person. He’s a little clingy, but that should go away after he feels more secure in his new surroundings.
- Schatzy will do steps. He even jumps up onto furniture, although we know it’s best to discourage that.
Schatzy has a couple of negative traits, if one wants to call them negative. He can get underfoot very easily because he likes to be with and where his human/s is/are. And he has a touch of separation anxiety. We feel confident that once he knows he is in his new home to stay, along with positive reinforcement and training, this should disappear in time.
By now, we’re sure you are asking “If he’s so perfect, why has he been in three homes already?” Up until we met him, Schatzy did not act as though he was fully potty trained. His first two homes passed him along way too early if they expected him to be fully trained within 3 months (at the first) and then he was barely a year old before the second home passed him onto the next. His third home tried the hardest to get Schatzy potty trained and we are certain that she had some influence on him. Although he did not achieve this goal in the months that his last owner had him, Schatzy has a perfect score in his foster home! No accidents! We will warn you that this might not be the case at your house. And we have a theory that perhaps Schatzy’s new home should not have rugs/carpet. Whether that’s the case (or cause) or not, we encourage all families to treat a new dog entering their house as a puppy, with all the protocol given to a puppy.
Schatzy is easy-going, sensitive, fun, lovable and sweet (perhaps we mentioned that before?). He is not neurotic about anything. He's just a happy-go-lucky youngster who is looking for a family to make a lifetime commitment to him. He doesn't think that's too much to ask for and neither do we.
