For anyone not familiar with puppymills, the conditions are deplorable. These dogs are not treated as pets and have little human contact. In most cases, dogs live in stacked cages with wire floors, where sanitary conditions are non-existent. Their number one reason for existence is to breed and provide an income flow from the sale of their puppies. After Kelcie’s usefulness was no longer evident, the vet was easily able to convince the breeder to surrender Kelcie for them to treat her and to find her a safe place for recovery.
While Kelcie exhibits several behaviors related to her prior living conditions, she is making remarkable progress in foster care. Kelcie had no prior potty training and has still been exhibiting frequent urination or marking. Upon arrival in foster care, she was constantly on the go, a pacer. She’s still finding her way and identifying her favorite spots and how she wants to spend her time, and we’re helping her learn how to relax. She’s definitely more active than a typical dachshund and she sleeps a lot less than the others in her foster home. She’s getting along with other dogs and a cat in her foster home, and she has been very cautious but fairly trusting of the people she has met. She appears to be a healthy pup with a positive attitude, who is surprisingly catching on to some aspects of her training rather quickly. However, puppymill survivors innately don’t know what it means to be someone’s pet, and to have warm and snuggly places, and to have their own possessions. And depending on how they’ve been treated in their prior living conditions, some of them find it hard to accept kind gestures without expecting insensitive or abusive treatment.
Although Kelcie is not yet ready for adoption, we wanted to share her information as we start our quest for finding her a perfect home who can best support her needs. We’ll be looking for someone who: may already be experienced with puppymill survivors or is willing to do the research to learn how they differ from other dogs; can provide special care and diet to compensate for her having only one kidney; will start from step one and train her as though she’s a puppy and help her learn how wonderful it can be to be someone’s pet; and, will pamper and spoil her for the rest of her life. We are currently learning her behaviors, working on her training, and providing healthy support. We’ll also be looking for a home with no small children and no large dogs, because one of the most remarkable things about Kelcie is that she is SMALL and could easily be injured by these larger and less attentive beings, especially if she gets underfoot. Kelcie weighs six pounds and you don’t realize how tiny that is until you meet her. Meet and greets will be part of her adoption process so we’ll be looking for adoptive homes within the Mid-Atlantic area.
