Dachshund Adoption Tips

Bringing a rescued doxie home can be very rewarding but can also be very stressful.  It generally takes at least a week for the new doxie to begin to feel comfortable in its new home. Please remember that your new doxie has been separated from it’s old home and is probably confused as to where it belongs now. Also, a lot of rescues have been abused and may not know how to trust just yet. Most will be scared at first nut with time and patience and guidance they will come around.

Here are a few tips to help make your new doxie’s transition  into its new home a smooth one.

When introducing the new doxie to dogs that are already in your home, it is best to let them meet on neutral territory so no one feels that their territory is being threatened. Let them meet in a controlled setting, such as a neighbors fenced back yard where they will have lots of room to sniff and check each other out.

It is easy to be excited about the new dog and pay more attention to it at first. Be sure to pay equal attention to the established dogs so they do not become jealous. Jealousy is big reason dog fights occur.

Be sure to give your new doxies plenty of time and space to check out its new yard and home. They are a very curious breed and must stick their nose into everything!

It isn’t uncommon for the first few days for your new doxie to have accidents in the house. This may occur until he/she figures out the new routine…and where the door is J. So please be patient with your doxie. A mini refresher course in housebreaking may be in order.

One of the main reasons dogs chew on things they shouldn’t (furniture, shoes, etc) is because they are bored. Make sure your doxie has plenty of toys available to play with. And make sure he/she is getting plenty of exercise and attention.
