Queenie Updates
Final Update December 21, 2000

It comes with great sadness to have to update this page on Queenie.  Queenie lost her battle with pneumonia on Thursday.  Her valiant effort to fight her illness came to an end and her loss will be felt by many.  Queenie had become a mascot of love and determination and fought with the typical vengeance that a good dachshund has.

Rest quietly, play exuberantly and romp happily in your peaceful world now dear Queenie.  You made a mark in many hearts and when we think of a happy, loving and and trusting little dog, we will think of you.

Please say a prayer for all those puppy mill dogs and those dogs who live in less than satisfactory conditions.  They need our help and they need to be released from their tortuous lifestyle.

Puppy Mill Pups Need Help!

Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue (CCDR) gained possession of 17 puppy mill dogs from a closing mill.  All of these dogs were in serious need of immediate vet care.  Some have been placed already, but others are still in foster care, some still getting medical care.  Queenie is a special dog among them and right now she needs prayers and monitary donations to help pull her through her medical ordeal.

CCDR needs help to cover the medical expenses of these dogs.  Most had mange of one sort or another.  All need or needed to be neutered or spayed and most needed dental work of some type.  Here is Queenie, a true  sweetheart that is in need of immediate help right now.

The puppy mill mascot for CCDR is Queenie.

Queenie is a red smooth female who is currently in foster care.  When Queenie came to CCDR she was suffering from severe Kennel Cough and Pneumonia.  There have been several occasions over the past couple of months where there was doubt that Queenie would survive.  Queenie’s teeth are so rotted the infection had spread throughout her body by the time she came to CCDR.  In many places her teeth are a black mass and parts of her gums have been eaten away.

There was some fear that her vital organs may have been affected by the infection but she is a strong little fighter and while she isn't out of the woods yet, she is starting to recover thanks to a great vet, some strong antibiotics (sometimes given intravenously) and a very loving, caring foster home.

Queenie is still suffering from the cough and still is taking many different medications for the fluids built up in her chest and the infection from her teeth, but she was able to play with her foster brothers and sisters the other day. Once her health is a little more stable, Queenie will still need to have her teeth taken care of, which will most likely result in the loss of additional parts of her gum, and she still needs to be spayed.

Update October 14, 2000:

Queenie needs our help.

Queenie was rushed to the emergency clinic because she began laboring in her breathing again.  The pneumonia is now severe and she is under intensive care.  Her medical bills are mounting and CCDR needs your help.  We are asking for any donation to help cover her medical expenses.  Queenie should never have been neglected so badly prior to coming into CCDR, and even though she was, she has remained a "fighter" in all her pain with a personality and a zest for life that touches everyone who meets her.  We cannot let this little girl down.

Update October 20, 2000

Queenie was able to go back to her foster home last evening.  She was still holding on and the necessary tests had been performed to determine the best course of action.  The vet felt she would recover better if she were back with her foster parents where she is more comfortable.  She is holding her own.  She is not out of the woods by any means, and the fact that she is a "fighter" is what is enabling her to hang in there.  She is such a happy dog and through all of this does not stop looking at you with the love in her eyes and a tail wag.  She knows she is being helped and she's doing her best to comply.

Update October 29, 2000
The results of Queenie's slides are back in at the vet.  They have determined that she is actually having several problems at once.  The first is the Pneumonia which just won't go away and the second is that she is actually
allergic to the bacteria in her system.  The biggest problem now is that they need to treat the problem with the allergy but are afraid to until the problem with the Pneumonia clears up at least a little.  Queenie is still
fighting that and is in no way out of the woods.  The vets admit to being perplexed as to why the Pneumonia won't clear up.  They have never seen it last this long.  Please keep praying and wishing the best for this little
girl.  Her spirit is truly amazing to all of those who have met her.

Update November 3, 2000
Queenie has been taken back to the vet where they will begin the steroid treatments to combat the allergy to the bacteria infesting her body.  The vets had preferred to wait until the Pneumonia had cleared but it is not
getting better and that combined with the bacterial issue is wreaking havoc on Queenie's little body.  The decision had to be made to start the steroids in order to give Queenie a chance.  This process is very dangerous in
Queenie's current physical state and she needs as many prayers and positive thoughts as can be sent her way.

Queenie really needs all the prayers she can get now.  Thank you for the donations you've given.  As you can see they are being quickly eaten up, but, with the help of all of you, we have been able to help this wonderful dog monitarly.  It is Queenie who is doing the fighting on her end and I'm sure she knows how many loyal supporters there are out there thinking about her.

Update November 7, 2000
The vet tried upping the amount of steroids for Queenie yesterday and she had a pretty sever reaction.  They have to back off for a day or so and then will try again.

Update November 13, 2000
Queenie is hanging in there!  She is home with her foster mom and on the Prednisone.  Her coughing is much better and her latest X-ray was greatly improved.  She is not out of the woods yet but it is really the first positive news we have had.  Queenie is just so happy to be home she tears around the house like a mad woman.

So many people have been watching for news and updates on Queenie and have sent prayers and good thoughts. We know these and Queenie's determination is what has made the difference.  Thank you for caring!  Let's hope all the future reports are posititve ones now.

Update November 20, 2000
Queenie is still home with her foster family.  The most recent x-ray showed a good decrease in the amount of fluid in her lungs but she is still coughing a lot.  The x-ray allowed the vets to see that there is indeed permanent
scarring of her lungs as a result of the long battle with the pneumonia.  Queenie will probably never be able to run and play without coughing a lot, but she sure likes to try. At this rate, it looks like she'll be home with the family for Thanksgiving, and what a better "thanks" could anyone ask for!

Update December 15, 2000
Queenie had to be rushed back into the clinc where she is under a constant watch.  Her pneumonia has taken a turn for the worse and Queenie is not wanting to eat.  Even through all she's been through, she would still eat something.  She is still fighting and the doctors are looking for that hopeful miracle that will turn her around. She is expected to remain in critical care for the next weeks. Please send prayers.

Update December 21, 2000
We lost our Queenie.  Her valiant effort to fight came to an end Thursday, December 21, 2000.  Her foster mom is devistated at her loss and many who came to know her are as well.  Be safe, be well and forever be happy.  You were very much loved.

Queenie's complications came as a result of neglect from conditions she suffered at the puppy mill.  There are thousands and thousands of these trusting dogs who have so much to offer living in conditons that are horrible.  Educate yourself with their plight, do not patronize shops that sell puppies and do your part and rescue a mill dog if you are able to.  Their love is profound and you will give a life to a dog that would never have had one had you not opened up your heart to it.
