For those of us who treasure our pets there is no greater fear than discovering that someone could be so cruel to you or your dogs and intentionally poisons them. This is what happened to Cheryl and Jim Dexter on September 12, 2006. There is no reason nor explanation but four of their precious dogs succumbed to an intruders cruel intent. Hopefully through the police and the media attention, the person who did this will be found and brought to justice.

Cheryl and Jim are long time rescuers who, over the years, have been responsible for placing many dogs into wonderful homes, absorbing all costs of care themselves. Their dogs were their life. As the type of pet owner we all hope to be, they took considerable care in making sure their pets never were a bother to anyone or to neighbors. Cheryl and Jim joined Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue and Jim took on the massive duty of Treasurer for the organization. They joined forces with the rest of the members and became an integral part of the rescue community. Their love of dogs and their love for the dachshund breed allowed many dogs to be saved and treated by their own generous donations towards their care, often times exceeding by enormous amounts, the amount that their adoption fee would bring in. Cheryl and Jim are philanthropists in the rescue community donating anything from time to money to dogs who need it.

On September 12, 2006, while Jim was on a business trip, Cheryl rushed two of their dogs, Fred and Ginger to their veterinarian at 6:00am. Ginger died and Fred was very ill. A few of their dogs had been vomiting on and off for several days but they had no idea what was causing it and even when examined by their vet they could find no exact reason for it. Until now.

Fred died at the clinic and Jim took an early flight home from his business trip in time to be with their other dog at the clinic, Blue, who also died. The Dexters were devastated. Just a few weeks earlier they lost their senior border collie mix, Smudgy, but Smudgy had cancer and it was assumed he died as a result of his disease. This would turn out not to be the case. The cause of death for Fred, Ginger and Blue was antifreeze poisoning while Smudgy died from rat poison that someone intentionally placed in their yard.

The remaining three dogs were taken in to the clinic where they were all tested and two of them, the dachshunds, Schatzel and Norman, both test positive for ethylene glycol in their system. Although they appeared to be "ok" Norman was showing signs of kidney failure and Schatzel's blood work was guarded. Sassy, the last of the dogs appeared not to have been affected, but was treated out of precaution. All three dogs were given the antidote they use to try to counteract the effect of the ethylene glycol and would remain at the clinic until they were well enough to come home.

Jim and Cheryl faced going home to an empty house for the first time and it was extremely  emotional. Not seeing the happy faces of their beloved dogs and knowing they'd never see four of them again was heart wrenching and a blow to their heart that was all consuming.

The police and the media arrived and information was taken and interviews with the media were given. The story appeared in many papers and on the news and it was hoped somehow the person who did this would be found. One important note was their gate had been left open. At no time is the gate ever open and the morning Jim left for his trip he double checked the gate as was his usual practice. It was shut.

The devastation this couple felt from losing their precious pets has been inconsolable. These innocent dogs died because of a cruel, sick person who had no soul and who not only devastated two kind people, but changed their world forever.

In memory of the four wonderful dogs that the Dexter's lost and as a tribute to the generosity the Dexters have done for all animals, the Dexter Dogs Memorial Fund has been established and is now operational. It won't bring back the four precious dogs that died but in their memory, dachshunds in need who may otherwise have to be turned away for lack of funds, will now be able to be helped. The rescue community and the pet community has been appalled and felt the anguish and devastation along with Cheryl and Jim and have banded together to not let these dogs be forgotten.

It is our turn to help. Donating to the fund won't bring back Fred, Ginger, Smudgy and Blue, but it will be a continuing reminder that they didn't die in vain and that the community cares enough to donate in their name towards a fund that will help other dogs in need.

To visit the Dexter's site and see their dogs as well as link to the stories in the news, visit: http://www.dexterdogs.net/

You may donate by sending a check to CCDR, noting it is for the Dexter Dogs Memorial Fund or by donating through Pay Pal. All money is tax deductible and will only be used for dogs that have extraordinary vetting needs.

This has been a tragedy that has touched not only Cheryl and Jim, but everyone within CCDR as well as the rescue community. If you cannot donate, your kind words will help Cheryl and Jim along with the time it will take to ease the pain of their loss.

Thank you for caring and thank you for contributing to the Dexter Dogs Memorial Fund.
