Sweetheart
Hi! My name is Sweetheart. I am four years old and have been told that I’m a Sweetheart, hence my name.  In fact, that is what my former owners named me.  I think I have been owned by a few different families.  My last family really loved me, but I was only with them for a short time when I had my accident.  I learned the hard way that it’s not good to jump up against baby gates because  when I landed, I ruptured a disk in my back.  The pain was terrible and I could not use my back legs anymore.  I was very fortunate that Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue answered my former family’s cry for help for me.  My new foster Mom came and got me and brought me to a hospital where I had the back surgery I desperately needed.

The good news is that I am no longer in pain, and I’m living in a foster home where I get really yummy food and good bones to chew on.  The bad news is that foster Mom makes me do a lot of  physical therapy which I hate.   Also, it’s very embarrassing to have to have help with my pottying as I’m a very sweet and sensitive girl.  But, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do, and I really do want to be able to walk again.  I know that I am a lucky dachshund to have this chance for recovery as my disk was so severely ruptured that without surgery, I had less than a 5% chance of recovery, and may have had lifelong pain.  My bill for surgery and hospitalization came to $3,200.   I would be so grateful if you would like to be my Buddy and help support me during my rehabilitation.

Sincerely,
Sweetheart

UPDATE 7/5/2007

Sweetheart is continuing to get more strength and use of her back legs.  It is almost 7 weeks since her second back incident where she was hospitalized for 3 days.  Her second incident occurred 6 weeks after her back surgery, and her surgeon felt it was probably due to another disc herniation.  She had relapsed to the point where she was not able to move her back legs at all.  However, now she is able to stand for seconds at a time, and she sometimes tries to take a step or two.  I've been going much slower with her rehab as I don't want to risk any setbacks.  She is still on crate rest for another week.  Sweetheart has been getting acupuncture treatments once a week and I'm sure they have helped her (especially giving her bladder and bowel control), and helping to eliminate her cramped upper body muscles.  Both her vet/acupuncturiest and I believe she will be walking again, but it may be another couple of months.  She is still a gentle, happy little girl.
