UPDATE JULY 10, 2006

We knew the day would come when someone would say "I have to have this DOG!" The day has come and Petey has been adopted! A family who has been waiting for the "right" dog for their family was introduced to Petey and he has now gone to his new home. They met him and waited until he was well enough and had gained a little more weight before leaving for his new home. He is doing very well and is training the family to be just the way he wants them to be and allowing his "new sister" to think she is still the boss!

Petey wanted to send a 4th of July picture, an appropriate one to show he has gained his independence from hunger and abuse! He is posing with his green frog and wants to send thanks to all who sent donations and letters of best wishes to him. CCDR wants to sincerely thank those who cared enough to contribute towards his care and cannot express the genuine feelings of appreciation that we have to know that people are kind and generous! Thank you so much! Petey thanks you, his green frog thanks you and CCDR thanks you!

------------------------Petey's story---------------------
Pictures say a thousand words and trigger a thousand emotions and Petey is a good example of visual horror. In this day of abundance we still have those who abuse and abandon dogs and those who just don't care that a living, breathing animal is so dependent on a human for food, love and shelter. Enter Petey.

Horribly underweight and malnourished by his previous owner, Petey was removed from their care and taken to a shelter in Colorado. One of our CCDR members was contacted and he is now in recuperation and working on necessary weight gain before he can be put up for adoption. Petey is only two years old and currently weighs 8lbs. He is a tweenie in size so he should weigh almost double that and is working slowing on getting some fat and muscle on his body. Because of his condition he is eating ZD canned dog food and is having to have special cream put on his skin to help offset the sloughing of skin that has happened as a result of shock to his body.

In spite of his physical condition being so poor, Petey is a wonderful, happy little guy with tons of energy and a wonderful and affectionate disposition. Despite the abuse he received from people, he is receptive to them and happy when around them. He loves being a member of the household! He loves his doggy door and uses it, never having an accident in the house. He is crate trained and is very quick to learn, taking verbal commands very happily and always wanting to please. He comes when called and can you believe it, is not a barker. That is unless you have cattle come up to the fence line. Then he's all about yelling at them!

Petey loves toys and has a favorite, a green frog that he was given by his foster mom. Petey regards that as his constant companion and has it with him 24/7, taking it everywhere he goes. The best part of Petey’s day beside breakfast, lunch, and dinner is when he curls up under the covers and sleeps next to a human at night. But FIRST, he puts his green frog inside the crate and then he takes his place in the big bed. That is one privilege that the frog doesn't get to share. Sleep sound little Petey, you have a big new day ahead of you tomorrow!

If you would like to be a buddy to Petey and help with his recovery, even $2.00 helps with his needed care. Those that donate allow us to help dogs like Petey and be there for them when they need us. Every dime that is donated goes to helping the dogs, we promise.

We'll keep you updated on Petey as he gets better and gains weight and we'll tell you when he is ready for adoption. In the meantime he will be in foster care and sharing it with a very special little green frog.

Thanks from CCDR and Petey!!!

Updates!

June 22, 2006 - Petey is finally enjoying life! He is gaining weight slowly and his appearance has changed drastically from his first photo's. He is starting to grow some hair on the areas that he suffered the worse loss especially his ears. His black and tan coat is starting to look much better as his over all health improves.

Petey is learning that there is life outside a plastic pet crate and is taking lessons on how to "squirrel hunt" from a 10 year old wirehair dachshund and how to curl up and take "power naps" in a sheep skin dog bed from a 12 year old dachshund. He is also taking "herding lessons" from the cattledogs and makes sure he lets the cattle know that they are not to linger too long at the gates. He's like a little sponge and soaks up everything and follows along with any activity that is happening in the household. Petey is a very bright guy and has learned to sit for a piece of kibble and loves toys that he can roll around and kibble comes out! He's a very busy little dachshund but will always take the time to seek me out wanting a quick pet or a kiss on the forehead and then he off and running!
