Nate
is an 8 year old chocolate and tan smooth dachshund. He was brought into
foster care on 3/28/2004 after six weeks of recovering from back surgery.
His elderly owner was devastated when she accidentally sat on him and broke
his back. She didn't realize she'd injured him so severely, so, for two
months he suffered pain before he was not properly diagnosed and had to
have back surgery. Nate's owner took care of his medical needs but knew
she wouldn't be able to care for him with the amount of rehabilitation
it was going to take so she allowed CCDR to bring him into the system where
he would get the continued care he needed in hopes of having a full recovery.
This
is Nate's second time in a rescue. Three years prior he came from an all
breed rescue group and was adopted by the owner who accidentally injured
him. Now that he is with his foster home he goes to therapy three
days a week costing CCDR $450/month. Nate is also having some complications
from the surgery and is experiencing pain or a tingling sensation from
nerve damage in his feet. Because Nate does not realize that it's a nerve
sending these signals to his brain, he reacts by biting and chewing at
his feet to relieve the discomfort. Sadly, before his foster home realized
he'd done it, Nate took one of his toes off to relieve the pain. Nate now
has to wear an elizabethan collar to keep him from being able to get to
his feet and he may possibly have to go on a drug similar to prozac to
medicate him so he doesn't feel these nerve sensations. With time it is
hoped the nerve damage will heal and it will stop the tingling sensation
to his feet so he will stop chewing them.
Nate is a happy and otherwise
healthy dog who is very affectionate and chatty. He plays and gets along
well with the other dogs in the house and as most dachshunds are, a good
eater. He's housebroken too, except right now he has a bladder infection
and has a few accidents, but that is being taken care of and he'll be back
to normal soon. He's a love and already spoiled by his foster mom where
he gets all the privileges of of the other dogs, especially sleeping in
bed with everyone.
Nate
is not ready for adoption at this time because he needs long term therapy
for nerve healing as well as for his back surgery so he will be in foster
care for a while. As you can see he has water therapy to strengthen his
muscles and back to help him walk again.Once his nerve damage heals and
he stops chewing his paws, he'll be ready for adoption. Nate will continue
with the necessary therapy his vet suggests but at $450.00 a month, CCDR
will find this a strain on an already strained budget. Nate's bills are
ongoing as many of our other buddies are but, CCDR is committed to these
dogs and hopes that by sharing their stories with everyone they see just
how important rescue is. Had it not been for rescue, Nate would have been
euthanized but instead, he is being taken care of, treated, healed and
LOVED. He needs your help. Won't you please be Nate's buddy?
