Lucy
February 2008
Hi my name is Lucy. I am six years old and lived with my previous owners from the time I was four months old. In January a terrible thing happen and I ruptured three disc in my back and I could not walk. My owners took me to the vet where I was put on medication and crate rest but, that did not help. I was taken back to the vet and was told I needed surgery. My owners decided to have me put to sleep instead. I am still happy. I do not want to die! The vet techs at the animal hospital called two kind people, Kim and Deborah who had a dachshund, to see if they could help. They said said I was too happy and sweet to die so they called there friend Sherry with CCDR. She got approval to get me and get surgery.  I was taken to Montgomery, Alabama to Carriage Hills Animal Hospital where I had back surgery at the beginning of February. I had three ruptured disc but came through surgery well.

I am in rehab for 4 weeks now, and will be using water therapy to help me learn to use my muscles. Two weeks later I can now thump my two back feet. I had not moved them much since January and yesterday I went potty on my own and that got a round of applause. Everyone says that  is great. I can stand on all fours for a few minutes too, and, I have not done that for a long time. Everyone feels I get stronger each day, so please,  if you would, could you be my buddy? My surgery was not cheap and I want to thank CCDR for helping me and I would be grateful if you would help me just a little so I can thank CCDR for their kindness to me and so many more that they help like me. Thanks for hearing my story and please smile when you see me or others like me cause we can still love and be loved  because of the help of wonderful dachshund lovers like you.

Update 4/3/2008:

Lucy has worked very hard to stand and can now balance herself to potty. She is still aways from being able to walk, but, she has been able to lift her legs to get into her crate. She is getting stronger daily and while progress is slow, she is determined and we know she can "do it." Go girl!

I'd love to hear from you. You can reach my foster mom at:  sherry52@united.net

Thanks,
Lucy
