Flower

Flower passed away at the end of September. She was very much loved and her foster family are very saddened by the loss. CCDR wishes to thank her loyal buddies for their help which allowed Flower to have as nice a lifestyle as she could have under her medical circumstances. Thank you for your support and for caring so much.

Here is Flower's story.

Flower was an eight to ten year old red smooth female beauty. She came in through the local humane shelter and was very pregnant. They were told by an older couple that she was a stray who lived under their house but I question this since she was housebroken when I got her!

Unfortunately, Flower lost her babies. Emergency surgery was required and the babies were found dead and already being absorbed by her body. For all purposes Flower was too sick to live, but she did. She is a fighter. After a complete physical she was found to have cataracts in both eyes and severe luxating elbow and shoulder. Flower will have to be on medications for the rest of her life. Her teeth are worn down and she has to eat canned food or specially ground hard food that is watered down so it is soft enough for her to eat.

Flower is a sweetheart and gets along with my two boys well. She loves to be next to a human and just lays there enjoying the companionship. She also enjoys snuggling under the covers. She is a quiet old lady who wants nothing more that to find a home with an equally quiet couple that she can spend her life with and mooch treats from. And someone who will protect her from the thunder... that is very important!

Flower gets her name from the gray hairs on her head and legs. She looks as if she was in the kitchen when someone was sprinkling flour. And they sprinkled flour on her too.

The gray hairs on Flower's head make us wonder how such an aged Dachshund could have even survived a pregnancy. Had she been spayed this would never have happened to her and her life would not have been endangered. Flower is now healthy and happy but not an ideal pet to some people who want a younger, healthy dog. Flower will remain in the care of CCDR for as long as necessary. She would love to have the company of a Buddy though... would you like to be her special Buddy?

Update on Flower - August 30, 2001
Flower made an emergency visit to the vet when she began doing poorly quite unexpectedly going into what was diagnoses as a diabetic coma.  She had blood work done and it was determined she is a severe diabetic and as we speak she is going through insulin shots to get regulated.  She is going to need shots twice a day for the rest of her life.  Aside from her diabetes, she also has a luxating shoulder and elbow so she is going to have to stay on glucosamine for the rest of her life since she is not a candidate for surgery.  Flower was also determined to be around 12 years old instead of the "youthful" 10 years that was originally thought.
