Cocoa Puff in his oxygen chamberCocoa Puff came to the Coast to Coast foster home as an owner surrender.  For fourteen years Cocoa Puff spent his life in one home with one special person. When his “Daddy” got a new girlfriend new carpets were more important and rather than tolerate Cocoa Puffs inability to "hold it" all the time, the old dog had to go. Arriving with no more than an old dog bed that had the strong scent of tobacco that permeated it, Cocoa Puff was taken in by two of CCDRs members who knew they'd give this old gentleman the dignified lifestyle and gentle understanding he needed to adjust to a new life and new lifestyle after all the years he spent in one place. In spite of never having lived with other dogs, he immediately fit right in with his foster family and charmed his way into the hearts of everyone who met him.

Cocoa PuffAs can happen with stress and dramatic lifestyle changes, Cocoa Puff soon developed an infection and severe breathing problems that prompted immediate attention.  The severity of his health caused him to have to stay four days at the veterinarian where he was put on intravenous antibiotics. His breathing declined and at the veterinarians advice he was moved  to the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital where he'd receive constant medical care and supervision 24/7.  His condition became touch and go and his breathing threatened and labored and he was immediately put into an oxygen tent in the Critical Care Unit.  He is still at Red Bank with around-the-clock care and has been given a 50/50 chance of recovery.  The staff is working hard to keep Cocoa Puff stabilized and without modern technology, Cocoa Puff would have died a week ago. Cocoa Puff seems to understand that the staff and especially his foster parents are praying diligently for his recovery and to get him over the hurdle to wellness. It is an hour drive to the clinic for the foster parents but they visit him daily and do what they can to make Cocoa Puff comfortable by bringing him familiar items from home. It is obvious Cocoa Puff feels a sense of closeness and comfort by these visits and has shown slight improvement, but it will take time and strength on Cocoa Puffs part and money on CCDRs part. Unfortunately modern medicine comes with a steep price tag and with 24/7 care in the Critical Care Unit, the vet bill has already accrued in the thousands and severely cut into the CCDR budget.

Our wish is  to have Cocoa Puff rally and return to his foster parents where he can live his life out surrounded by two people who are already passionately in love with him. We bring you his story so the public knows we deal with dogs with many health issues and some dogs tap into our budget much harder than others. A dollar here and a dollar there helps us continue to do this important task.

Won't you help Cocoa Puff and others like him? Thank you for reading his story and thank you for caring.
