Chi Chi is an example
of how CCDR is willing and able to help all Dachshunds with special needs.
Chi Chi is very fortunate to have been adopted, but you can still read
about him here. He represents just a portion of those dogs who needed
extra medical help and who would never have been turned away for lack of
funds. CCDR will always dig deep into their pockets to help a dog
as well as accept gracious donations from generous people who want to help.
CCDR members frequently donate any money they have to help add to any funds
needed to pull a dog through. It's all about the dogs and whatever
it takes, CCDR does it.
Here is Chi Chi's story.
Chi Chi was attacked and
even though he had other injuries Chi Chi sustained a broken jaw. He had
emergency surgery to wire the jaw and was transported to Naples, FL to
a foster home. He was doing very well, we thought, and then the wires
in his jaw started to slip out. After two attempts to reset them, we learned
that Chi Chi has lost so much bone and muscle mass that the pins will not
anchor properly and the jaw is not healing. After a second surgery Chi
Chi is doing so much better and has really rallied with all he's been through.
Surgery costs have been extremely high, but well worth it. Chi Chi
is such a sweet dog and has been a trooper through the whole ordeal. If

Chi Chi Update!!!
Hi
Everyone! As you all know by now, my name is Chi Chi and I have had
a real hard time with a broken jaw that didn't want to heal. Well,
thanks to so many wonderful people just like you, I was able to have the
surgery to fix my jaw on May 17, 2001.
The people at CCDR who love
me were able to find me a really wonderful surgeon named Dr. Hay who did
a great job. He had to take a little piece of bone from one of my legs
and graft it to my jaw in the place where the break would not fuse together
and then he had to put these little metal plates on each side of my bottom
jaw to hold it together and make it strong. I stayed in the hospital
for 2 days and when I went home, I felt like a new pup!
I
have really been feeling great. I can even close my mouth all the way now
which I haven't been able to do for nearly 4 months and the best part is
that I can eat real food again and not that mush they were giving me from
the blender! (yuk!) I went back to Dr. Hay yesterday and he took
my stitches out. He said I have to eat canned food for just a little longer
and then I can start eating dry food again.
I
still have to go back for more x-rays and what we hope will be a final
check-up in about 8 to 12 weeks. It is costing a lot of money to
fix me but everyone says I'm worth it and I'm really thankful to all of
you who are helping to pay my doctor. I wish I could give each one
of you great big doxie kisses!
Love,
(the now "handsome once again") Chi

| The original
post of how Chi Chi was injured
Chi Chi, 6 yrs old and the
sweetest boy you could ever hope to meet, was attacked quite viciously.
In addition to other minor injuries which have pretty much healed, Chi
Chi sustained a broken jaw. He had emergency surgery to wire the jaw and
was transported to Naples, FL to a foster home. He was doing very
well, we thought, and then the wires in his jaw started to slip out. After
two attempts to reset them, we learned that Chi Chi has lost so much bone
and muscle mass that the pins will not anchor properly and the jaw is not
healing.
Chi Chi's only hope is to
have another surgery to have the pins removed and put plates in to support
and strengthen the jaw. Without this surgery the outlook for Chi Chi is
grim. He cannot eat because the jaw is not stable enough to even make the
motion necessary to even lap up liquids. His foster mom has been
trying to "pour" liquified food into his mouth with a child's liquid medicine
feeder. |
