Bailey
came to CCDR through an owner surrender who knew they couldn't care for
her any longer. As you can see, they allowed her weight to get out
of hand and then it was too hard to control along with her other medical
conditions. She came to us weighing over 40 lbs. Bae Bae (she
knows her nickname!) is 8 years young and was very much loved by her former
family. We see so much abuse in rescue where dogs are hit and kicked,
have no socialization and are rail thin from starvation. This is
the other end of abuse - loving and spoiling them so much that they are
literally killed with the kindness. She is a standard dachshund but
probably should weigh 23-25 pounds. She can hardly stand and her
legs quiver trying to hold the weight up. She takes a few steps and
then has to lay down. However, it's very cute to see her waddle around!
Bailey
was diagnosed with Cushings disease in January of 2004. The owners
thought this was why she was so heavy but Cushings doesn't cause this kind
of weight gain. Bae Bae simply was overfed. She was treated
properly for the Cushings but then they stopped the maintenance dose of
the medication because she became ill. When taken into the CCDR system
she had a full geriatric exam and an ACTH stim test to check the Cushings
Disease status. The Cushings test came back just about in the normal
range so she doesn't have to deal with that any longer. All of her
other tests came back within the normal range and her heart is in good
shape. Her liver is slightly enlarged but considering the Cushings
and weight, this wasn't alarming to find out and probably won't cause her
any problem in the future. The x-rays taken were evaluated by a veterinary
radiology specialist and the most he could say was "FAT DEPOSITS"!
She has had a history of urinary tract and skin infections but these are
due to her weight and we have no reason to believe she will ever have this
again if she sheds the extra pounds and keeps it off. We wipe her
"folds" out each day with baby wipes because she can't clean herself and
she rolls over for you and loves it!
Bae Bae
is one of the happiest and jolliest dogs there ever was and no one is a
stranger to her. She seems to go through life smiling!
She loves everyone she meets and greets people and other dogs with that
fat tail going 100 mph. She was never allowed outside and was trained
to use pee pads. Sometimes she will use them and sometimes she will
miss. We are currently trying to get her acclimated to going outside.
Since she can only walk a few steps at a time it's hard to work with her.
However, this is one smart dog so as she loses weight and moves around
easier she will be successful at outdoor potty training. She does
enjoy being outside and watches the other dogs run and play and really
wants to join in. She taught herself the doggie door and enjoys going
out to snooze in the sunshine.
Bailey
is currently eating diet dog food (R/D) mixed with green beans, carrots,
and no fat yogurt. She also is taking glucosamine supplements due
to the strain her excess weight has put on her joints. We are going
to the vet each week for a weight watchers weigh-in so we will update her
progress. After the first 2 weeks in her foster home she has already
lost 3 pounds. It seems to be a little easier for her to move around
and she is starting to explore the yard which will help her get in shape
for bikini season! If you care to make a donation to offset her current
vet bill, CCDR and Bae Bae would greatly appreciate it! She will
be put up for adoption very soon so if you think you have room in your
home for a happy "little" girl, please let us know!
